Effects of Family Resilience on People with Mental Disorders

Lee In-Soo
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of family resilience on the self-efficacy and stress-coping ability of people with mental disorders. The research was based on results from 103 subjects who attended community mental health or social rehabilitation centers. Data were collected via self- administered questionnaires. Results indicated that family resilience was highly correlated with self-control, confidence, self-efficacy, and coping ability. Family resilience appeared to have an important effect on the self-efficacy of people with mental disorders. In addition, better communication, a sub-factor of family resilience, correlated directly with higher self-efficacy. The author concludes that by improving families¡¯ organization patterns and communication process, it is possible to improve clients¡¯ self-efficacy and stress coping ability.
